Koa Rothman claimed the 2025 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout in Memory of the Duke at Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.

A Pipe Event Like No Other
Once again, waves were scored on a scale from 0 to 12, with each surfer's best three waves counting toward the final results.
Tube riding skills are everything judges want to see: The bigger the wave, the deeper and longer athletes stay inside the barrel, the better.
There was even time for an impossible take-off into the barrel, followed by a stylish layback exit by the one and only Clay Marzo.
"It's honestly my favorite event. There's no other event you get to surf Pipeline six times with your best friends like this," expressed Koa Rothman.
"We all know each other pretty well, so, with no elimination, it's just surfing Pipe with four of your best friends, which you never get because Pipe is usually crowded with 100 to 150 guys."
"My family and Hui O He'e Nalu put it on. I've known it literally since I was a baby, and it's crazy. I am kind of speechless."
"Just being out there with your friends and no one out is like an experience you can't have any other day - that's what makes the Shootout so special."
"You just keep surfing and surfing, and they'll hold it as many days."
The champion actually locked in a perfect 12-point ride for a classic Pipe drop into a stunning long barrel.
The four contest days also crowned Team Japan the best overall team for this year's Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, which featured everything from blown-out surf to Second Reef take-offs to pristine barrels and Backdoor gems.
