A Nokia foi escolhida pela Nasa para construir a primeira rede celular na Lua, disse a empresa finlandesa nesta segunda-feira (19), enquanto a agência espacial dos Estados Unidos planeja um futuro em que os humanos retornem e estabeleçam assentamentos lunares.

A Nasa pretende mandar humanos novamente à Lua até 2024 e trabalhar para uma presença de longo prazo no satélite por meio do programa Artemis.

A Nokia disse que o primeiro sistema de comunicação de banda larga sem fio no espaço será construído na superfície lunar no final de 2022, antes que humanos voltem para lá.

A companhia fará parceria com uma empresa privada de design de naves espaciais sediada no Texas, a Intuitive Machines, para entregar o equipamento na Lua por meio de um módulo lunar. A rede se configurará sozinha e estabelecerá um sistema de comunicações 4G/LTE na Lua, disse a Nokia, embora o objetivo seja no final mudar para 5G.

A rede dará aos astronautas capacidades de comunicação por voz e vídeo e permitirá a troca de dados biométricos e telemétricos, bem como a implantação e o controle remoto de veículos lunares e outros dispositivos robóticos, de acordo com a empresa.

Ela será projetada para suportar as condições extremas de lançamento e pouso lunar e para operar no espaço. Terá que ser enviada à Lua de uma forma extremamente compacta para atender às rígidas restrições de tamanho, peso e energia das cargas espaciais.

A Nokia disse que a rede utilizará 4G/LTE, em uso mundial na última década, em vez da mais recente tecnologia 5G, em razão do maior conhecimento sobre a primeira, bem como confiabilidade comprovada. A empresa também “buscará aplicações espaciais da tecnologia sucessora do LTE, o 5G”.
