Os resultados do segundo trimestre do jornal norte-americano New York Times ficaram acima das estimativas de Wall Street, pois sua edição digital, que inclui notícias, podcasts e palavras cruzadas, superou a versão impressa pela primeira vez.

O Times, que disputa anúncios com grandes empresas como Facebook e Google, da Alphabet, mudou o foco para um modelo sustentado por assinantes em um esforço para reduzir sua dependência de publicidade.

A transição valeu a pena para a editora que espera que a receita de assinaturas digitais no terceiro trimestre cresça cerca de 30%.

“Publicamos nossos melhores resultados para novas assinaturas digitais e, pela primeira vez em nossa história, a receita total digital excedeu a receita do impresso”, afirmou o presidente-executivo da empresa, Mark Thompson, em comunicado.

A empresa disse que registrou 669 mil novos assinantes digitais no trimestre.

A receita de assinaturas aumentou 8,4%, para 293,19 milhões de dólares, ajudando a empresa a superar uma queda de 43,9% na receita de publicidade.

A empresa alertou que a receita com publicidade continuará sendo pressionada no trimestre atual e espera um declínio entre 35% e 40%.

A receita total da empresa caiu 7,5%, para 403,75 milhões de dólares, acima das estimativas dos analistas de 387,18 milhões, segundo dados da Refinitiv.

Excluindo itens, a empresa teve lucro de 0,18 dólar por ação no trimestre encerrado em 30 de junho, superando a estimativa dos analistas de 0,01 dólar por ação.
