O presidente-executivo do TikTok, Kevin Mayer, deixou o comando do aplicativo chinês apenas três meses após assumir o cargo, e alguns dias depois que empresa processou o governo do presidente dos Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, por causa de decreto que efetivamente proibia suas operações no país.

Ele será substituído pela gerente geral dos EUA, Vanessa Pappas, interinamente, disse a TikTok em um comunicado.

A renúncia ocorre em um momento complicado para o rápido crescimento do TikTok, que tenta convencer os EUA e a Índia de que não é uma ameaça à segurança, ao mesmo tempo em que mantém discussões com possíveis compradores após a exigência do governo norte-americano para que venda suas operações no país.

Mayer foi o principal executivo de streaming da Walt Disney antes de se tornar CEO do TikTok e vice-presidente operacional de sua controladora ByteDance em 1 de junho.

“Nas últimas semanas, conforme o ambiente político mudou drasticamente, fiz uma reflexão significativa sobre o que as mudanças estruturais corporativas exigirão e o que isso significa para a função global para a qual me aderi”, disse Mayer em uma carta aos funcionários.

“Neste contexto, e enquanto esperamos chegar a uma resolução muito em breve, é com o coração pesado que gostaria de informar a todos que decidi deixar a empresa.”

O fundador e presidente-executivo da ByteDance, Zhang Yiming, disse em uma carta separada vista pela Reuters que a empresa estava “se movendo rapidamente para encontrar soluções para os problemas que enfrentamos globalmente, especialmente nos EUA e na Índia”.

Ele disse que Mayer havia assumido o cargo enquanto a empresa estava “entrando em nosso momento mais desafiador”.

“Nunca é fácil chegar a uma posição de liderança em uma empresa que está se movendo tão rapidamente quanto nós, e as circunstâncias após sua chegada tornaram tudo ainda mais complexo”, disse Zhang.
