Um adolescente e dois homens de 19 e 22 anos foram acusados nesta sexta-feira (31) de serem os responsáveis pelo ataque a contas do Twitter de personalidades importantes, como o ex-presidente dos Estados Unidos Barack Obama, o bilionário Bill Gates e o chefe executivo da Tesla, Elon Musk em 15 de julho. 

De acordo com o Departamento de Justiça dos EUA, Graham Clark, um adolescente de 17 anos, foi acusado de 30 crimes e foi preso pelas autoridades em Tampa, no estado da Flórida. Clark foi quem postou mensagens por meio dos perfis hackeados solicitando investimentos em bitcoin, segundo a Procuradoria de Hillsborough. Estimativas dão conta de que ele conseguiu reunir mais de US$ 100 mil com o golpe.

Mason Sheppard, um britânico de 19 anos conhecido como Chaewon, foi acusado de ser responsável por hackear as contas, por realizar fraudes eletrônicas e crimes de lavagem de dinheiro. 

Já o mais velho, de 22 anos, é Nima Fazeli, um residente de Orlando conhecido como Rolex. Ele foi acusado de ajudar e incentivar os outros dois acusados com os crimes. 

Invasão de contas

No dia 15 de julho, as contas invadidas publicaram posts parecidos, em que prometiam “devolver” valores aos fãs ou consumidores, por meio de bitcoins, e apresentavam códigos de carteiras de criptomoedas, dizendo que doariam de volta o dobro do dinheiro que os seguidores mandassem para uma entidade chamada Crypto for health.

Após verificar os ataques, o Twitter suspendeu o acesso da maioria das contas verificadas da plataforma, o que inclui governos, veículos de imprensa, celebridades, políticos e outras pessoas e instituições conhecidas.

Na última quinta-feira (30), o Twitter disse que o roubo de dados de funcionários levou à invasão. O incidente atingiu um pequeno número de funcionários através de um ataque por “phishing”, que rouba dados da vítima.

A rede social disse que os hackers atacaram cerca de 130 contas, fizeram publicações em 45, acessaram a caixa de entrada de 36 e conseguiram baixar dados de sete dessas contas.
