A farmacêutica americana Moderna anunciou neste domingo (26) que começará nesta segunda-feira (27) a terceira fase de testes da vacina experimental contra a covid-19, e que conseguiu dobrar o financiamento governamental do projeto para US$ 955 milhões.

Em comunicado, a empresa afirmou que modificou o contrato com a Autoridade de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Avançado de Biomedicina (BARDA, na sigla em inglês) para ampliar em US$ 472 milhões a quantia inicial destinada ao desenvolvimento da vacina mRNA-1273, que entra agora em estágio avançado.

“Após conversas com a Administração de Alimentos e Fármacos (FDA) e com a Operação Warp Seed nos últimos meses, a empresa decidiu executar uma terceira fase significativamente maior do teste clínico, fechando uma lacuna no financiamento da BARDA graças a esta modificação no contrato”, explicou.

O contrato original com o órgão previa U$ 483 milhões à Moderna para o desenvolvimento da vacina mRNA-1273, que inicialmente teria um “número menor de participantes na terceira fase”, em comparação com os 30 mil voluntários necessários nos Estados Unidos.

A Moderna comunicou que, ao iniciar nesta segunda-feira a terceira fase do teste, dirigido pelo Instituto Nacional de Alergias e Doenças Infecciosas dos EUA, se torna a primeira empresa da corrida americana pela vacina a entrar nesta etapa avançada.

Nesta fase, 30 mil participantes receberão aleatoriamente uma dose de 100 microgramas do fármaco ou uma dose de placebo com o objetivo principal de comprovar se pode “prevenir os sintomas de covid-19”, além de prevenir a infecção do coronavírus SARS-CoV-2 e casos graves.

“Agradecemos à BARDA pelo contínuo compromisso com a mRNA-1273, nossa vacina candidata contra a covid-19”, destacou em comunicado o diretor executivo da Moderna, Stéphane Bancel, ao afirmar que os dados “alentadores” da primeira fase levam a empresa a pensar que é possível “ajudar a lidar com a pandemia e prevenir futuros surtos”.

Os Estados Unidos já registraram 4,18 milhões de casos de covid-19, incluindo mais de 146 mil mortes, de acordo com a contagem independente realizada pela Universidade Johns Hopkins.
