Astrônomos acreditam ter encontrado um novo planeta bebê “nascendo”.

Seria a primeira vez que imagens desse tipo são capturadas.

Os cientistas estavam observando uma jovem estrela chamada AB Aurigae, que fica a 520 anos-luz da Terra, quando notaram um denso disco de poeira e gás girando em torno dela.

No fundo desse disco de poeira e gás, eles encontraram uma estrutura em espiral com uma “torção” perto do centro, um sinal de um novo planeta sendo formado.

As imagens foram capturadas com o VLT (sigla em inglês para Telescópio Muito Grande) do Observatório Europeu do Sul. Localizado no deserto do Atacama, no Chile, o megatelescópio, o maior do mundo, é usado por astrônomos para estudar o universo.

“Milhares de exoplanetas foram identificados até agora, mas pouco se sabe sobre como eles se formam. Precisamos observar sistemas muito jovens para realmente capturar o momento de quando planetas se formam”, disse Anthony Boccaletti, que liderou o estudo no Observatório de Paris, na França.

No passado, era muito difícil capturar imagens nítidas e profundas o suficiente desses discos, de forma a encontrar a marcação de “torção” que evidencia o nascimento de um planeta.

O Observatório Europeu do Sul está atualmente construindo um novo telescópio, o ELT (sigla em inglês para Extremely Large Telescope), também no Chile. Os cientistas esperam que o ELT permita que os planetas sejam estudados com ainda mais detalhes.
