Covid-19: empresa anuncia vacina com resultados promissores

A Moderna Inc informou nesta segunda-feira (18) que sua vacina experimental contra a covid-19 mostrou potencial em um estudo de estágio inicial, já que produziu anticorpos neutralizadores do vírus semelhantes àqueles encontrados em pacientes recuperados, o que fez o preço das ações dispararem 25%.

“A fase provisória 1, embora em estágio inicial, demonstra que a vacinação com o mRNA-1273 produz uma resposta imune da mesma magnitude que a provocada por infecção natural”, disse Tal Zaks, diretor médico da Moderna, em comunicado.

Oito pacientes que receberam a vacina da Moderna mostraram níveis de anticorpos semelhantes àqueles de amostras de sangue de pessoas que se recuperaram da covid-19, de acordo com resultados iniciais do estudo realizado pelo Instituto Nacional de Saúde dos EUA.

Todos os 45 participantes do estudo receberam três doses diferentes da vacina, e a Moderna disse que viu um aumento de dependência da dose na imunogenicidade, a capacidade de provocar uma reação imune no corpo.

Solução do problema

A vacina da empresa está na vanguarda dos esforços de desenvolvimento de um tratamento para o vírus de disseminação veloz, e na semana passada recebeu o selo de “aprovação rápida” da agência de saúde dos Estados Unidos para que a revisão regulatória seja acelerada. A Moderna espera iniciar um estudo de estágio final mais amplo em julho.

Atualmente, não existem tratamentos ou vacinas aprovados para a covid-19, causada pelo novo coronavírus, e especialistas preveem que uma vacina segura e eficiente pode demorar entre 12 e 18 meses.

“Estamos investindo para intensificar a fabricação para que possamos maximizar o número de doses que conseguimos produzir para ajudar a proteger tantas pessoas quanto pudermos da SARS-CoV-2”, disse o executivo-chefe da Moderna, Stéphane Bancel.

A empresa assinou contratos com a farmacêutica suíça Lonza Group AG e com o governo dos EUA para produzir em grande quantidade a vacina.

Também se descobriu que a vacina mRNA-1273 foi geralmente segura e bem tolerada no estudo de estágio inicial, disse a empresa.

Um participante do teste teve vermelhidão no local da injeção, o que foi caracterizado como um efeito de “grau 3”. Não foi relatado nenhum efeito colateral grave, segundo a empresa.

As ações da Moderna subiram 240% no período anual encerrado no fechamento do pregão de sexta-feira (15).
