A declaração dada a jornalistas nesta quarta-feira (29) veio um dia depois de o presidente Donald Trump sugerir o banimento de voos entre os dois países ao dizer que os brasileiros passam por “surto sério” de novo coronavírus. “Vamos trabalhar em estreita colaboração com o Brasil, queremos recuperar nossas economias e um dos elementos para isso é restaurar as viagens aéreas comerciais entre nossos dois países”, disse Pompeo. O chefe da diplomacia norte-americana não detalhou como essa retomada seria feita. Entretanto, ele disse que o retorno dos voos deverá ocorrer “de maneira segura para o Brasil e para os EUA e para nossos bons amigos”. Na véspera, o governador da Flórida, Ron DeSantis, disse a Trump que não via necessidade em suspender os voos saindo do estado — dos aeroportos de Miami e Fort Lauderdale — ao Brasil. O presidente, porém, insistiu: “Se precisar [interromper voos], nos avise”. Depois, Trump disse que avalia testar passageiros de voos internacionais saídos de “áreas muito infectadas” e afirmou que “o Brasil está chegando nessa categoria”. “Acho que eles vão ficar bem, eu espero que eles fiquem bem.
